On the 4th of March 2005 the Med Red Rally set sail for the first time from Tel Aviv to Port Said. After a warm welcoming the yachts started the transit through the Suez Canal in the longest convoy of yachts ever to cross the Suez Canal on the way to the Red Sea and Sharm el Sheikh.
The Med-Red Rally has since then become a traditional event and new surprises have been added every year.
In 2006 the rally set off from Marmaris, Turkey sailing directly to Herzliya and continuing to Port Said and the Red Sea.
In 2007 sailing along the coast of Turkey was added to the rally route as part of the rally - the Med Fun Turkey.
The 2008 rally sets sail from Tel Aviv on May 10th towards Port Said. In Port Said the rally will split with the options of continuing down the Suez Canal to the Red Sea, or staying in the Mediterranean and sailing to Alexandria with the Mini Med Red.
All yachts will return to Herzeliya marina and continue with the Rally to Girne, N. Cyprus and along the coast of Turkey from Finike to Marmaris.
The Med Red Rally is an unforgettable experience for all participants, combining sailing in unexplored areas, adventurous land tours, sun, fun and parties all the way along the route. The Med Red Rally offers sailors the opportunity to participate together with other seafarers from all over the world in a challenging adventure, which is unique. It's a true expression of the concept of a 'sea without limits’. Only a sporting event of this magnitude can bring people together for a shared experience, which transcends national boundaries and cultures.
The support the rally receives from all countries and marinas it visits on the way is immense and we are happy to see that the contributions and partnership is continuing and increasing. The main aim of the Rally is to promote yachting tourism along the route and brings the marinas to the attention of the international yachting community. Even more importantly, the local authorities have now realized that yachting tourism has reached their doorstep.
A word from the organizors
Easy Swissa - Rally Commodore
Easy Swissa, Rally commodore: “The support and efforts of our Egyptian and Turkish partners, and the enthusiasm of the participants, helped us decide to turn the Rally into an annual event, with the view to opening the sailing area between our countries to as many international yachtsmen as possible”.
Many yachtsmen and women are reluctant to transit through the Suez Canal to the Red Sea after hearing adverse reports of bureaucracy and other hassles. But we showed how, by joining a properly organized rally, yachts can sail the area easily and safely and we are proud to announce that the Med Red Rally has been the longest convoy of yachts that ever passed through the Suez Canal.
Eitan Friedlander - Rally Organizer
Since the Kings Regatta in 1995, I have come to realize that the best way I can contribute to the common good in our part of the world is by doing what I love most - sailing. Sport bridges cultural and political divides, it is common language that opens up the path of communication between nations and people.
The Med Red Rally is built on the success of the first rallies. We learnt that the sailors enjoy sailing together and experiencing the togetherness of seamanship and exploring new routes. We are going all out to widen the participation and attract a much more international gathering of sailors. In this way we hope to show yachtsmen from all over the potential of this wonderful area.
2005 and 2006 Med Red Rally sailors greeted the Rally with such excitement and enthusiasm that it has given us the strength to go ahead and turn this Rally into a tradition.
We welcome all of you, sailors and yachtsmen, who are looking for new and somewhat unknown sailing destinations to join us on a very unique event.
Med Red Rally 2008 offers 4 different and exciting sailing options:
